Gareth's chip: landing spot 6% plus 1% roll = 7
But in the video he takes his aimpoint/start line read of 7, from behind the ball.
Chip was 25% carry, 75% roll, so the read from behind the ball should have been 7x.75 = 5. Correct.
Asking this clarifying question to ensure the various read options.
Short Game Univer - Landing Spot Strategies Video
Hi Ron,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Yes, you are correct, the read from the ball would have been 5, the read from the landing spot would be 7.
Regards,
Gareth
Opps, I just watched Jamie's chip again(same video). His high lofted shot was a basic read, so it should have been 1% slope x 2 (double the #) x .33 (1/3 roll). In the video, he calculated the read as 1% x .33 roll, forgot to double the read. Am I correct?
Thanks, that is good news. Wanted to ensure I understood the various options.
Hoping the AimPoint short game approach will help me improve my scrambling, which Arccos indicates that I am below my benchmark group
I am a little confused about distance. Seldom does a ball start rolling at the landing spot. Often, it bounces several times afterwards, depending on whether I play a low or high shot. It seems to me that would alter my roll measurement. Might be splitting hairs, but I consistently have 2 to 3 bounces on a chip shot. Any advice?
Hi Joseph, we are reading two elements, the deflection the ball experiences when it lands and the roll out section. As you know the first third of a putt is non relevant when reading a putt, so the bounce of the ball will normally be done before it enters the middle third, that allows us to read the roll section like a normal putt.
